PPF In-House vs Dealership PPF: What's the Difference (and Why It Matters)
You've just picked up a new car. The finance is signed, the keys are in your hand, and then the salesperson says it: "Want to add paint protection film?"
It's tempting. It's easy. It's all on one invoice.
But convenient isn't always best, especially for something that sits on your paintwork for 5–10 years. Here's how dealership PPF differs from PPF done in-house at a specialist studio, and why the studio route usually wins.
What is dealership PPF?
Dealership PPF is a paint protection film package sold at the point of sale, usually bundled with your new car purchase. Many dealerships don't have their own installation team. The film is often applied by a third-party installer, and the dealership acts as the middleman.
That's not automatically a bad thing. But it does mean:
- You're buying through a salesperson, not the installer. Questions about film, coverage or edges get relayed rather than answered by the person doing the work.
- Packages are often standardised. Think "front-end protection" or a set bundle, rather than coverage built around how you actually drive.
- The price includes a margin. You're paying for the convenience of adding it to the deal.
What is in-house PPF?
In-house PPF means your car goes straight to a specialist paint protection studio, where the same team that quotes the job also installs it, under one roof.
At Wrapify, that's our workshop at 23 Ramsay Street, Spotswood. You talk directly to the people who'll be wrapping your car. Film choice, coverage and finish are all decided together, and if something needs attention later, you know exactly who to call.
Dealership PPF vs in-house PPF: side by side
| Dealership PPF | In-house PPF (specialist studio) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who installs it | Often a subcontractor | The studio's own PPF specialists |
| Who you talk to | Salesperson | The installer / studio team |
| Coverage options | Often set packages | Tailored: partial, high-impact or full vehicle |
| Finish options | Usually limited | Gloss, satin/matte or coloured PPF |
| Pricing | Bundled, with a margin | Direct, transparent quote |
| Aftercare | Can be unclear | Direct support and clear aftercare guidance |
| Accountability | Split between dealer and installer | One team, one point of contact |
5 reasons to choose in-house PPF
1. Specialists do specialist work
PPF is unforgiving. Edges, curves, sensor areas and panel gaps all need precise cutting and stretching. A studio that installs film every single day builds a level of skill a dealership add-on service often can't match. The result should be no bubbles, no lifting, no visible edges.
2. Coverage built around your car, not a package
A daily commuter on the Westgate doesn't need the same protection as a weekend prestige car. In-house, you can choose high-impact areas only (bonnet, bumper, mirrors, A-pillars) or go full vehicle. Wrapify also offers gloss, satin and coloured PPF, so you're not stuck with a one-size-fits-all option.
3. Better value, with a clear price
Going direct means you're paying for the film and the install, not a middleman. Our pricing is published: for example, full-vehicle gloss PPF starts from $5,500 + GST for a sedan, and we'll give you a tailored quote for your exact car. You can see how we compare PPF with ceramic coating to work out what your car really needs.
4. Direct communication
When you deal with the installer, you get straight answers. Which film suits your paint? How will it look on a matte finish? What should you avoid in the first week? No relayed messages and no guesswork.
5. Proper aftercare and one point of contact
PPF lasts longer when it's looked after. With an in-house team, aftercare isn't an afterthought. We'll walk you through it, and if something needs a look down the track, you know exactly where to go. It's also why we offer a free Uber home when you drop your car off, because the experience matters as much as the install.
Questions to ask before you say yes to any PPF quote
Whether it's a dealership or a studio, ask:
- Who is physically installing the film?
- Which film brand and grade is being used?
- What exactly is covered? Panels, edges and wrapped edges included?
- Can I see examples of their work? (Ours are on our showcases page.)
- What does aftercare and support look like?
If you can't get clear answers, that tells you something.
FAQs
Is dealership PPF bad?
Not necessarily. Some dealerships partner with excellent installers. But you're often paying for convenience, and you may have less control over film choice, coverage and who does the work.
Will PPF affect my new car warranty?
No. PPF is a non-invasive surface application and doesn't affect your manufacturer's warranty.
How long does PPF last?
Quality film typically lasts 5–10 years, depending on the film grade, how the vehicle is maintained and the conditions it's exposed to.
Can I get PPF after I've already bought my car?
Absolutely. You don't need to add it at handover. Booking direct with a studio gives you more time to research, compare quotes and choose what's right.
