Coloured PPF vs Vinyl Wrap: Which Is Better for Your Car in Melbourne?
Want to change your car's colour without losing your factory paint? For years, a vinyl wrap was the only real option. Now there's a second contender: coloured paint protection film (PPF).
Both change the look of your car. Only one is built to take a hit. Here's how they compare on protection, lifespan and cost, and which makes more sense for Melbourne drivers.
What is coloured PPF?
Coloured PPF is paint protection film with colour built in. It uses the same thick, flexible urethane as clear PPF, so it absorbs stone chips, light scratches and bird droppings before they reach your paint.
The difference is the finish. Instead of a clear layer you barely notice, you get a new colour or a matte "stealth" look, plus the protection of PPF in one product. Many premium films also self-heal, so light swirl marks disappear with warmth from the sun or warm water.
How is coloured PPF different from a vinyl wrap?
The short answer: a vinyl wrap is mainly cosmetic, while coloured PPF is protection first and a colour change second.

If your car does a lot of freeway kilometres, the gap in protection matters. A stone that bounces off coloured PPF can still chip the paint under a vinyl wrap.
How long does each last in Melbourne's climate?
Our vinyl wraps are built to last 5 to 7 years, while quality PPF typically lasts 5 to 10 years. Wrapify uses Defcon Films, an Australian PPF made for Australian conditions, backed by a 10-year manufacturer warranty against yellowing, cracking and peeling.
Melbourne is hard on both. Summer UV, 40-degree days and sudden hail all age a film faster. Vinyl tends to show it first, with fading or cracking on the bonnet, roof and boot where the sun hits hardest.
To get the most out of either:
- Park undercover or in the shade when you can
- Hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo, never a brush car wash
- Clean off bird droppings and bugs within a day or two
- Follow our aftercare guide
How much does coloured PPF cost compared with a wrap?
Coloured PPF costs more. At Wrapify, full-vehicle coloured PPF starts from $7,500 + GST, while vinyl wraps start from $4,500 + GST.

Vinyl wraps start from $4,500 + GST, with the final price depending on vehicle size, wrap type and design complexity.
The final price depends on your car's size, panel complexity and film choice. The easiest way to compare is a free quote for both options on your actual car.
The way to think about it: vinyl costs less upfront, while coloured PPF costs more but protects your paint for longer. If you'd otherwise pay for clear PPF and a wrap, coloured PPF can work out closer than it looks.
Can you combine a wrap with PPF?
Yes, and it's a popular middle ground. The usual setup is clear PPF on the high-impact areas, then a vinyl wrap for colour over the rest.
High-impact areas include:
- Front bumper
- Bonnet
- Mirrors
- Headlights and leading edges
You get chip protection where it counts and the full range of vinyl colours and finishes, without paying for coloured PPF across the whole car. Not sure how much coverage you need? Read our guide to full front vs full body PPF.
Which should you choose?
Choose coloured PPF if:
- Your car is new, high-value or you plan to keep it long term
- You want a colour change and real paint protection in one product
- You do lots of highway driving and want to avoid stone chips
- You care about resale value and want the factory paint kept perfect
Choose a vinyl wrap if:
- Changing the look is your main goal
- You want chrome, colour-shift, carbon or a specific brand colour
- You might change colours again in a few years
- You're wrapping a business vehicle for branding
Choose both if: you want a bold vinyl finish but still want the front of the car protected.
FAQs
Does coloured PPF fade? Quality coloured PPF is UV resistant and holds its colour far better than vinyl. Some fading can still occur over many years, especially on cars parked outside all day.
Does coloured PPF self-heal? Most premium coloured films do. Light scratches and swirl marks fade with warmth from the sun or warm water. Deep gouges won't heal.
Is coloured PPF worth it on a new car? It's one of the best times to do it. The paint is perfect, so you protect it before the first stone chip, and you get a new look on day one.
Can coloured PPF be removed? Yes. Like a vinyl wrap, it can be professionally removed to reveal your original paint, which is good news for resale or the end of a lease.
Can I put a ceramic coating on top? Yes. A ceramic coating over PPF makes washing easier and adds gloss. See our ceramic coating vs PPF guide.
